“The Gasparilla Invitational gained a lot of momentum in the early 80’s when the likes of Dick Siderowf, a two-time British Amateur Champion came to compete at Palma Ceia Country club.  Gasparilla became a serious event for great golfers which included several U.S. Champions.   These Champions who over the years were eligible for “The Masters,” in their own words said that the Gasparilla was a great “Tune-Up” for the April event since Palma Ceia’s green speeds closely resembled Augusta’s. “
